This movie is a gospel story. It's true to life, not in the hero's journey kind of way but the "life is random and unpredictable and there are malevolent forces and the best you can do is do your best and help other's" sort of way. The movie is dived into four parts, a lead up, and three parts for each of the rabbi's the main character goes to for help. Each rabbi is older and presumably wiser than the last. The rabbi's help is comical but true life, the young rabbi suggests to change his perspective (great help that is). The next one suggests to help others; via the story of a mysterious messages etched into a non-jews teeth. It's a great story in that it says to help others, and offers nothing deeper than that for explanation. He has to take it on faith. He has to aknowledge the mystery. There are no final answers. The final super old Rabbi refuses to take a meeting with the poor tortured main character. The main plot is a malevolent force, Saul, seduces the main characters wife, who leaves him and also attempts to undermine his career via anonymous letters to the university staff. Saul is a random, unlucky malevolent force. No one else sees what he is doing. He is wrapped in a false persona of kindness and compassion.
